Homemade non-toxic skin moisturizer

See also

Many people are concerned about what they put into their body, but what about what is put on the body? The skin is the largest organ and what it absorbs often eventually ends up inside the body. Many conventional lotions, creams, and body butters contain toxic ingredients. We certainly wouldn’t eat these ingredients, so why would we put them on our skin to be absorbed? Many organic and all-natural varieties of moisturizers are very expensive and can also contain questionable ingredients. Here is how you can make your own non-toxic moisturizer that is made up of ingredients that could actually be eaten.

Ingredients:
• One part Shea butter (4 ounces or ½ cup)
• Four parts Coconut oil (16 ounces or 2 cups)
• 1/2 part Olive oil (2 ounces or ¼ cup)
• Several drops of Essential oil (whatever scent preferred, i.e.: lavender, rose, patchouli, tea tree, etc.)

Mix in a blender or food processor until texture is blended and creamy (about a minute). Mixture will be soupy. Pour into several containers (4 to 12 ounce in size) and place in refrigerator for about an hour to set. Mixture will harden. Remove container from refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes. Mixture will become the texture of lotion. If mixture becomes too warm, it will become soupy, and if it becomes cold it will harden (similar to how butter reacts to various temperatures). Therefore, be careful to place in tight containers if carrying in purse or bag. To preserve freshness, leave containers in refrigerator up to several weeks until ready to use.

Olive oil and coconut oil can be purchased at any Twin Cities’ grocery store. Shea butter and essential oils can be purchased on-line or locally at various Twin Cities’ Co-ops or Whole Foods Markets. Hint: Twin Cities’ Costco has the best price on organic coconut oil.

Additional Hints:
• Make even better by using all organic ingredients
• Use fancy jars to give away as gifts
• Use small 3 ounce containers when traveling (to get through airport security)
