After a long day at the pool or a fun day playing at the park, a creamy, cold treat, like an ice cream sandwich, is a delicious bite to end the day. While store bought items are convenient, homemade ice cream sandwiches offer an unique spin on the perennial favorite.

For even the novice cook, homemade ice cream can be fun and easy. Having the right tools can make the process so simple that store bought ice cream will be a thing of the past. While there are many kitchen products on the market, these options are simple and easy to use.

Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker

Cuisinart’s latest ice cream maker has a 2-quart capacity and features a new paddle with 20% faster processing time. The LCD control panel includes two speed settings (one for ice cream and one for gelato), a countdown timer, and three dessert selection buttons for ice cream, gelato, and sorbet.

Zuko Ice Maker

With the Zoku ice cream maker, homemade ice cream is ready in minutes. This high-performance ice cream maker will make decadent ice cream, custard, frozen yogurt, gelato, sorbet and sherbet. Make individual portions of these delicious frozen treats on any countertop, in as little as 10 minutes.

The ice cream maker is designed to store easily in your freezer. To use, remove the frozen bowl from the freezer and place it into the protective sleeve, pour in your ice cream mixture, churn and scrape the stainless steel bowl with the included spoon, and watch as the ice cream freezes in minutes before your eyes.

A simple vanilla ice cream can be the star of the ice cream sandwich. Nielsen-Massey Vanilla extract can bring a full bodied vanilla flavor to the homemade ice cream. This recipe will make your friends ready to enjoy creating personalized ice cream sandwiches.

Vanilla Ice Cream

16 fl. oz. whipping cream
16 fl. oz. pint half and half
1 cup sugar
1 tablespoon Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract* or Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste*
1/8 teaspoon salt

Mix all ingredients until sugar dissolves. Cover and chill until ready to use. Follow the manufacturer's directions on your ice cream maker to churn and freeze ice cream.

With the homemade ice cream, here are some tips and shortcuts for making and personalizing your own homemade ice cream sandwiches:

  • Dress it up: Roll the sides of finished ice cream sandwiches in mini chocolate chips, mini M&Ms, sprinkles, toasted coconut or nuts to add color and texture.
  • Take a shortcut: If you are short on time, purchase bakery cookies to use with the homemade strawberry ice cream recipe, below, to build your own ice cream sandwiches.
  • Chill out: Keeping your homemade ice cream cold is the secret to a sandwich that won’t fall apart or get soggy. Take the time to re-freeze ice cream between steps - your patience will be rewarded with perfect sandwiches every time.
  • Keep them fresh: Wrap each sandwich individually in plastic wrap immediately after building each sandwich. Keep them in the freezer until just before serving.

Next time your family is craving the sweet, creamy treat of an ice cream sandwich, try making one as a family. It is easier than you think.
