Homemade chocolate ice cream

Almost everything tastes better when chocolate is included. Ice cream is no exception. The chocolate ice cream recipe below is a creamy, concoction of chocolate syrup and sweetened condensed milk frozen to the delight of ice cream aficionados.

Ice Cream – a frozen treat made up of cream, sugar and other flavors

Ice Milk – a frozen treat made up of milk, sugar and other flavors

Frozen Yogurt – a frozen treat made of yogurt, sugar and other flavors

Sorbet – a frozen dessert made of fruit puree, whipped to a light texture which has no milk.

Sherbet – is similar to a sorbet since it is fruit based, but contains milk for creaminess.

Gelato – a frozen dessert of milk, sugar and other ingredients, just lightly whipped making it more dense

Homemade Chocolate Ice Cream


  • 4 eggs
  • 1 c. white sugar
  • 1 T. vanilla extract
  • 1/2 pint of cream or half & half
  • 2 cans (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 – 16 oz. chocolate syrup
  • 2 quarts whole milk


Combine eggs, sugar, vanilla and cream, mixing until well blended and sugar is dissolved. Pour into freezer canister. Add sweetened condensed milk and chocolate syrup; stir well. Add milk to fill line on canister.

Freezer per directions on your ice cream freezer. Makes approximately 1 gallon.

Suggestion: For a different flavor replace chocolate syrup with caramel or butterscotch syrup. Other additions can include chopped pecans, walnuts or almonds, chopped up peanut brittle or mini chocolate chips. Use your imagination!

For an easy dessert, slice up vanilla pound cake or angel food cake and place on a dessert plate, top with one or two scoops of ice cream, top with whipped cream. For an extra sweet treat, in place of whipped cream use marshmallow crème, especially if the ice cream is chocolate!

Using graham crackers or chocolate graham crackers break into squares at perforated lines. Soften ice cream (your flavor of choice) and spread a thick 1 to 1-1/2 inch layer of ice cream on each graham cracker. Top with the second graham cracker, wrap in aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Place into a freezer bag and freeze until just firm.

Another way to make ice cream sandwiches use store-bought chocolate covered graham crackers with the ice cream.
