Homeless woman struck and killed while walking dog

Concord, CA -  A tragic accident claimed the life of a homeless woman and her dog on Sunday evening. The woman, Sherree Lindborg, 52, was walking her dog, when they were both struck by a vehicle.

The first vehicle, driven by a 17-yr-old driver, struck Lindborg and her dog. The driver got out of the vehicle to check on the injured woman and her dog, when a second vehicle struck.

The second driver stopped for a short period of time - spoke to the 17 yr-old and then fled the scene. The first driver stayed until the police arrived.

The man that left the scene and driver of the second car, Robert E. Summers, 21, discovered that police were searching for him and he turned himself in on Monday.

Summers claims that he left the scene because he thought that he "only hit the dog".

Interesting how the man could stop, speak to someone at the scene, yet claim to believe that "only a dog" was involved. And disturbing that the same person did not care enough to check on the condition of the dog that was hit.

Summers was initially arrested for felony hit and run charges and his vehicle was impounded. He was later released pending results of an ongoing investigation.

Police are hopeful that witness to this tragic accident will step forward to share what they saw. Anyone that saw the hit-and-run accident is asked to phone the investigator, Eric Olson at 925-671-5096 or the Concord police tip line at 925-603-5836.

A memorial for the homeless woman is being held on Saturday at Hillcrest Park.

Examiner Note: Initital reports on this story stated that the woman was tending to her dog that had been hit by a vehicle, when she too was struck. The police are conducting an investigation which should help to clarify exactly what took place Sunday night.

    What about the dog?
HUGE kudo's to the 17yr old who stopped.

Amazing that a 17 y/o had more brains than the 21 y/o who left the scene. Scumbag.

    Was the dog killed, too?

    RIP Ms. Lindborg.

What happened to the dog? R.I.P. Ms Linborg. Hopefully the 21 yr old will get a stiff sentence.

The title says the woman was trying to rescue the dog, but the story says they were both hit by the first driver. Maybe the title needs to be changed?
Sad story either way, though. RIP Ms. Linborg.

Melinda - I should probably change it - there are a couple of versions of this same story - the first that I learned of stated that the woman was trying to rescue her dog when she was hit (the dog had been hit by the first car) The later story said that they were both struck at the same time - it is unclear if the dog was struck by the first car and she was tending to it in the street when the 2nd car hit, or if they both went down at the same time.

The second driver should have been kept in jail for a number of charges, all of which should be considered felonies. What a piece of filth! The first driver showed a lot of character. It doesn't say how the first driver managed to hit the woman and her dog in the first place or how the dog is. RIP Ms. Linborg.

A very tragic story for both the woman and her companion...Thank you for your compassionate reporting, as always, of stories of animals and their humans...

No matter how it went down, it's a very sad story. The second driver should definitely face charges. He did nothing except prove that he is an uncaring SOB. RIP Sherree and her dog.

I'm sorry to hear about the woman and her dog. The 17 year old had more sense than the 21 year old. May both of them RIP. Hope the guy is found guilty and thrown back in jail.

Forever Rest In Peace Ms. Linborg and Master/Miss Linborg (the dog)...
The 2 drivers should be found guilty... especially the scum who left the scene saying that he thought he just hit the dog! I am without doubt that the Live of th poor Dog (God Bless his/her soul) is much more Precious than of this SOB!

I've always had the utmost respect for homeless people with pets - it seems they take better care of their animals than people with money do! RIP to the lady and her dog - we all know he had the best of love with you!!!! Thank you too to the 17 year old how stayed even though he was at fault it seems - he showed courage and bravery in doing that even though I'm sure it was emotional for him! Kudos to you young man - stay sweet!
