The 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards took place on Sept. 23, 2012, at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles. Here is what these Emmy winners said backstage in the Emmy Awards press room.
Outstanding Drama Series
“Homeland” has broken the four-year winning streak that “Mad Men” had in this Emmy category. What’s your reaction?
Claire Danes (co-star): We didn’t make our show just to undermine them. We’re delighted and thrilled and just a little startled by this. I don’t think anybody was expecting to be recognized in this way right off the bat, but it feels pretty nice.
All of the nominees in this category were shows on cable, not network, TV. Is it too hard to do a show like “Homeland” on a broadcast network?
Howard Gordon (creator/executive producer): That’s a really good question. [Fox Broadcasting Co. president of entertainment] Kevin Reilly has asked himself that. It’s a good question. We are grateful that we’re on Showtime. They have been phenomenally supportive and great partners. I think they gave us great patience from the very top, more than just allowing us to us to put people naked and use swear words, to take time with the characters and let the stories breathe. Showtime has been a phenomenal partner. David Nevins, Gary Levine, Randy Runkle. We’re really grateful.
Claire Danes said earlier that Kale is the most kick-ass member of your crew. Is there anyone else on your crew that kicks ass?
Danes: Nelson, our DP [director of photography].
Mandy, can you talk about the dynamic that you have with Claire Danes on “Homeland”?
Mandy Patinkin (co-star): Well, being with Claire has been one of the true gifts of my life. I watch her like I’m a first-grade student trying to figure out how to do it, because it’s like a magic trick watching her. And not just Claire, but the whole company. Everyone, ever actor that’s in this ensemble, everyone behind the camera, it is one of the most glorious companies of people, writers, from the guy who gets the coffee to the guy who gets the first word to everyone in between. It is one of the great gifts of all of our lives, to be a part of this.
