Homeland Security and Congress demand answers from Sony regarding the PSN outage

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is pissed and they want answers. After all, with such a stressful job, being denied PSN online play for two weeks is reason enough to break out the ol' terrorist kit and investigate anyone, right?

Homeland Security's presence in the PSN debacle joins the ranks of the FBI, Federal Trade Commission and 22 state attorneys generals in investigating the April 20 attack on PSN.

The Department of Homeland Security representative, Chris Ortman, reported to NextGov that Homeland Security's "Computer Emergency Readiness Team is working with law enforcement, international partners and Sony to assess the situation."

As if enough slices haven’t been taken out of the PSN pie already, a House of Representatives committee wants in on the action.

"We write today regarding the recent data breach experienced by Sony Corporation's PlayStation Network operated by Sony Computer Entertainment of America," the subcommittee's letter to SCEA President Kazuo Hirai said. "According to Sony's statement, the breach occurred between April 17 and April 19, and impacted as many as 77 million account holders' personal information. A public acknowledgement of the breach was not made until April 26."

The subcommittee is inquiring Sony about the type of date seized in the attack, when it reported the attack and if Sony has possible leads on the hackers involved in the attack.

The PlayStation Network has been offline for 10 days now, with no signs of life aside from the Official PlayStation Network Blog updates. SCEA President Kazuo Hirai will address the media about the PSN security breach in Tokyo, May 1, at 2 p.m. (1 a.m. EDT).
