According to E! Online, which first broke the news Friday (Aug. 16), Cruz will play Gina Mendez, a "hard as nails" NYPD detective who will work closely with Mike Weston (Shawn Ashmore) and the FBI when a new killing spree hits the city.
The character will first appear in the sophomore drama's season premiere, which picks up a year after the events of the finale.
She joins fellow new cast members Connie Nielsen, who will play a new love interest for Ryan Hardy (Kevin Bacon), and "Dexter" star Sam Underwood as a potential follower of Joe Carroll (James Purefoy), who will be back for the new season.
Cruz's TV credits include "True Blood," "Dexter," "Alphas," "Nip/Tuck," "Scandal," "NCIS" and "Necessary Roughness." She most recently played Major Joy Mendez on Showtime's hit series "Homeland."
"The Following" Season 2 is slated to premiere in January 2014 on FOX, while "Homeland" returns for its third season on Sunday, Sept. 29.
