The Minor Home Repairs program announced today they are ready to help residents of Pontiac and Royal Oak Township with free minor home repairs. The program was developed by Rebuilding Together Oakland County (RTOC) and is made possible through a partnership with Charter One Foundation.
The program was started in response to the many calls received by RTOC from low-income homeowners who are often struggling to make urgent repairs to their homes.
“We’ve received over 100 calls this past year for this type of service”, said Jerry McKay, President of Rebuilding Together Oakland County. “With the $15,000 grant from the Charter One Foundation, we can now respond to many of these calls for help.”
The free program helps low-income seniors, families, and people with disabilities by addressing needed minor repairs before they become serious safety or deferred maintenance issues.
“A minor home repair is one or more items that can usually be done in less than two hours by one or two of our volunteers. In a few cases,” says McKay, “we may hire a professional to do the repair.”
“Charter One is pleased to partner with Rebuilding Together Oakland County to provide minor home repairs to families in the community,” said Sandy Pierce, President of Charter One, Michigan. “We are committed to the community and know that when our communities prosper, we all prosper.”
Rebecca, a Pontiac resident, recently requested assistance with an outdoor repair. Her rain gutters were pulling away from the house, potentially causing water and ice damage to her home.
“With my income being cut from lost hours at my job,” said Rebecca, “I couldn't afford repairs to my home or to possibly do them myself. I reached out to RTOC… they provided me with multiple helping hands to repair my home… keeping my home warm and dry! Just when I felt I was at the end of my rope, Rebuilding Together was there with open arms and caring people to help me get back on top.”
Other examples of Minor Home Repair Projects, according to RTOC, include minor plumbing replacements like faucets, toilets, or clogged drains; minor electrical repairs such as a bad outlet, switch or light fixture, minor roof repair, window repair/sash replacement, door or lock repair/replacement, heating repairs or energy efficiency measures such as a programmable thermostat, accessibility modifications such as providing grab bars, minor exterior repairs to gutters and eaves troughs, painting, and light yard work.
