Home packing tips for a move or self-storage

Moving into a new place can be so exciting, but the thought of packing up your entire existence is dreadful. All of your furniture, linens and accumulated stuff can take time, energy and manpower to package up and transport from one home to another.

Are you the type of person who throws everything into a box, or spend time carefully packing up your things? Sure there’s the option of hiring a moving team, but if you are a diy’er, you may want to pay attention.

Whether you are planning a move or need to make room in your current home by storing stuff away in self-storage, here are a few things you may want to consider.

{MOVING AND SELF-STORAGE TIPS}

  • Categorize and label wisely – No one likes emptying out an entire container to find one little thing. Before you pack anything, separate them into like categories (kitchen, bath, linens) so you can find things with ease at a later date.
  • Fill her up – Flimsy boxes not filled to the top can buckle under the pressure of another stacked on top. Weight permitting, fill each box to the top with a tolerable weight you can carry. This will help reduce future breakage.
  • Give large items and storage some tlc – Clean out all appliances, dressers and any other large, non-upholstered item that won’t fit in a box. Secure all doors and drawers to prevent any potential accident. Drain them of any liquid (if they hold any) and leave a small opening (e.g. door slightly ajar) to help prevent mold and mildew
  • Use furniture covers over exposed pieces to prevent scratching
  • Individually wrap all glass and delicates (dinnerware, mirrors, art) in bubble wrap or a durable material
  • Remove all lampshades and light bulbs (wrap in newspaper or bubble wrap) from lighting fixtures
  • When loading a moving truck or self-storage unit, load your biggest items first
  • Always stack heaviest boxes on the bottom and never on top
  • In a self-storage unit, place boxes at the front that have items you may need to access more than others
