Home & Garden Shows, the Wright Scoop

Do weary bleak wintry days get you down? Why not break out of the winter blahs and become a home and garden event traveler. Walk through green-space displays, hear well-known speakers and talk to Industry vendors.

For the year 2012, state of Virginia residents begin their tour by visiting the Virginia Home & Garden Show scheduled Jan 14-16 and held at Meadow Event Park in Doswell. Show theme, “Escape the Cold & Get A Glimpse of Spring” provides homeowners the opportunity to see, compare and buy the latest products and services to beautify their homes and yards. As an alternative, the Virginia Flower & Garden Expo returns to the Virginia Beach Convention Center Jan. 20-22. And, for those in the northern Virginia area, there is the Capital Home & Remodeling Show held at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly on January 20-22.

During February, specific to central Virginia, the MAC Events 2012 Richmond Home Show and Maymont Flower & Garden Show occurs on Feb 9 – 12 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center in Richmond. For northern Virginia residents, The Capital Home & Garden Show is held at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly on February 24-26. On the other hand, for those who chose to expand their travel options, a competing indoor-show opportunity is the Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD which is held February 3-5.

By March, home and garden events are in full swing. Richmond residents are welcomed by their Richmond Home & Garden Show held March 2-4 at the Richmond Raceway Complex in Richmond. The Tidewater Builders Association hosts their Mid Atlantic Home & Garden Show on March 9 – 11 at the Virginia Beach Convention Center. The city of Fredericksburg hosts at its Expo & Conference Center a home and garden event on March 23-25.

And, the Washington Home & Garden Show is held at the Washington Convention Center in DC on March 9-11, the Green Expo at the Kellogg Conference Hotel in DC on March 8; and the Philadelphia Flower Show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center on March 4-11.

In later spring, events shift to either a specialized theme or are held out-door. For example, The Garden Club of Virginia provides annual flower events, the daffodil, lily and rose shows. These shows encourage interest in artistic flower arranging and the horticulture knowledge of growing and caring for flowers. Virginia’s historic garden week kicks off and provides access to more than 250 of Virginia’s finest gardens, homes and historic landmarks. Then, the area of Leesburg continues its Leesburg Flower & Garden Festival. Now in its 22nd year, this festival offers award winning landscape displays, fresh cut flowers, trees and shrubs, garden sculptures, arts and crafts, fountain displays and much more.

By now, you may be a little weary from your travels; but, don’t forget to visit the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Year 2012 marks a centennial celebration of the original gift of the 3,000 cherry trees from the city of Tokyo to the people of Washington, DC. Come, relax in a park-like atmosphere and celebrate the coming of spring!

To resolve the blahs of a winter season, participate in tours that identify intriguing plant introductions, newly discovered artists and craftspeople, and cutting-edge products, techniques and designs. Become a garden traveler!
