Everyone has heard of the “Popemobile.” But few may realize that Pope Francis also owned a 2013 Harley Davidson Custom A 1,585cc Dyna Super Glide motorcycle, given to him by the legendary company as a birthday gift last June.

And while the Pontiff never actually rode the bike, he was able to get a lot of mileage out of it for the Caritas Rome’s Don Luigi di Liegro hostel and soup kitchen at the Termini railway station when it sold for a record $284,000 at the Bonhams auction in Paris on Wednesday after specifying that the kitchen was to be the beneficiary of all the proceeds from its sale (along with a signed XL biker jacket). The Pontiff had also signed the motorcycle’s fuel tank.

“This is possibly a record for a Harley-Davidson bike,” exclaimed Ben Walker, who manages motor vehicle auctions for Bonhams, after stating that it garnered “14 times the estimated winning bid of $20,400 in just six minutes on the block.”
