Holy Cross Regional School celebrates Catholic Schools Week

Holy Cross Regional School joins Catholic schools around the country celebrating Catholic Schools Week this week.

Holy Cross, founded in 1879, is a fully-accredited college preparatory school for students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade.

Holy Cross's website, www.hcrs-va.org, has information about all that the school has to offer.  On Sunday, parent and alumni Colleen Dougherty spoke at St. Thomas More Catholic Church about her school.

The Doughertys are parents of three children, all currently students at Holy Cross.   Some of the information Mrs. Dougherty shared with the church members included:

  • The school is academically strong
  • 100% of last year's graduating seniors were accepted to colleges
  • 80% of last year's seniors earned honors or advanced degrees
  • The small class sizes allow for individual attention for each student
  • Holy Cross students and staff are like family to one another

According to Mrs. Dougherty, Holy Cross supports what she and her husband do at home, helping to produce young adults who are respectful, honest, hard-working and prayerful.

Other Holy Cross parents said that they were willing to sacrifice vacations, new cars, brand name clothing, and almost anything else to provide their children with the quality education offered at Holy Cross.

Many of these parents said that one of the most important aspects of Holy Cross is the fact that faith is built into everything taught at the school.

In the words of parent Vikki Stern, "The love that you feel along with the presence of God in those hallways is precious to me."  Ms. Stern, a Holy Cross alumni, had decided before she had children that she wanted them to attend Holy Cross.

Students and parents alike speak of the feeling of family that exists at Holy Cross.  Students enjoy the small class sizes and the one-on-one time with teachers.

In addition to strong academics, Holy Cross also boasts excellence in their athletic teams, forensics team, and Lego League team.

Students start and end each day in prayer, something important to many of the parents with whom this examiner spoke.

Over 60% of Holy Cross High School students take at least one AP class.  Holy Cross offers Dual Enrollment with Central Virginia Community College, allowing students to enter college already with college credits.

Holy Cross will hold an open house on Tuesday, January 31 from 5:00-6:30pm for families considering attending the school.

Today, students and teachers celebrated 100th Day.  It was also Student Appreciation Day and no homework night.

Wednesday will be early dismissal day and "K Day," a day for prospective Pre-K and Kindergarten families.

Thursday will be Prayer Partner Day and students will make cards for Meals on Wheels while enjoying cookies and hot chocolate.

Friday will be Green and White Day, the school colors.

The elementary curriculum exceeds the requirements for Virginia's Standards of Learning and includes the Accelerated Math program, creative writing, and phonics.

Middle schoolers can take math, foreign language, and science classes for high school credit.  They are also eligible to participate in athletics and other extra-curriculars.

Students at all grade levels are provided ways to give back to their community with service projects and other volunteer opportunities.

If you have ever considered a Christian education for your children, this is a good time to visit Holy Cross and see if it's the right school for your family.
