Hollywood turns out for NAACP Image Awards

“12 Years a Slave” topped all motion picture nominees at Saturday night’s 45th NAACP Image Awards ceremony which was held in Pasadena, California and televised on TV One. The drama won 4 awards on the night; capturing best film, best supporting actress in a motion picture (Lupita Nyong’o), best director (Steve McQueen) and best writing in a motion picture (John Ridley).

“12 Years a Slave” wasn’t the only film winner last night. “Fruitvale Station” took home the trophy for Outstanding Independent Motion Picture while the Outstanding International Motion Picture honor went to “War Witch”. “Free Angela and All Political Prisoners” won for Outstanding Theatrical Documentary. The Outstanding Televison Documentary honor went to “Richard Pryor: Omit the Logic”.

In television, the Outstanding Television, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special category was won by the BET hit starring actress Gabrielle Union “Being Mary Jane”. The show beat out “Luther”, "CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story”, “Betty & Coretta” and “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight”. “Luther” star Idris Elba won for Outstanding Actor in a Televsion, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special while Union netted the Outstanding Actress in a Television, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special award.

The Entertainer of the Year award went to Kevin Hart who’s currently burning up the box office with the hit films “Ride Along” and “About Last Night”.

Vin Diesel, Nia Long, Chadwick Boseman, Tyler Perry and Octavia Spencer were among the presenters for the show which was hosted by Anthony Anderson.
