Hollywood looks for box office hat trick with “Underworld" franchise

It’s been a solid two weeks at Cineplexes nationwide as Hollywood looks to leave the 2011 slump behind. This week a trio of new films invades theaters hoping to take advantage of a sudden uptick in attendance.

The most high profile of the three is the latest installment in the seemingly endless “Underworld” franchise anchored by knockout Kate Beckinsale. In the fourth film of the series, humankind is now aware of both the Vampire and Lycan clans, and they embark on a quest to destroy them. Standing in their collective way is vampire protector Selene, who will do anything to save her kind.

Like the “Resident Evil” series, the (now 3D) “Underworld” franchise isn’t going anywhere. The horror films have done very well in this January timeframe and “Underworld: Awakening” will look to once again capitalize on an audience that clearly remains interested.

Speaking of knockouts…mixed martial arts star Gina Carono makes her big screen feature film debut with “Haywire.” Originally, when news of this movie broke, many laughed it off as just another attempt by an athlete to cross-over to acting.

Although since then a few new developments had emerged such as a strong supporting cast of known stars including Ewan McGregor and Michael Dougals signed on and Steven Soderbergh was announced as its director. Now the thriller about an betrayed black ops solider seeking payback on those who have wronged her has clawed its way into the conversation and audiences are legitimately psyched for its release.

Lastly, “Star Wars” guru George Lucas blasts his way back into theaters with “Red Tails.” A new take on the historical tale of the legendary Tuskegee air men, the movie which took decades to bring to the screen, takes a new look at the trailblazing African-American troops that battled a war against international enemies and one against domestic discrimination.

While the story of the Tuskegee air men is well known, this new spin on the story comes from 20th Century Fox and George Lucas’ Lucasfilm, which means you can expect some cool visual effects that previous adaptation was probably lacking. This Lucas produced version also has a talented array of lead actors including Terrance Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr., Bryan Cranston and Gerald McCraney.
