This last week we had the extraordinary honor to attend the Philhellenes Gala for the NGO Praksis. The evening was hosted by our dear friend Miss Jane Owen, who invited many of Hollywood’s “Philhellenes” (a Greek word used to describe ‘a lover of Greece and Greek culture') to raise much needed funds and awareness for the foundation and its many humanitarian focused programs.
Jane and Ms. Marie Halaka and Mr. Elena Giammas, the founders of Praksis described the main goal of the NGO is to combat the social and economic exclusion of socially vulnerable groups, and to defend their basic civil and social rights. Statistics show that two (2) out of three (3) Greek households have an annual income lower than 18,000 Euros and that currently, 31% of the Greek population is facing the skirts of poverty and social exclusion.
Our group, including Her Majesty The Queen of the Hellenes, Queen Anne Marie of Greece, HRH Princess Theodora of Greece, HIRH Archduke Gregor and HIRH Archduchess Jacquelyn Habsburg-Lothringen of Austria, HE Count Ludovico and HE Countess Kathryn D. Marenzi von Tagliuno und Talgate, Baron Clement von und zu Franckenstein my best friends Miss Jessica Kill and Mr. Max Ryan (yes, he is the much coveted heart throb from "Sex and the City 2"), international celebrity photographer Miss Nunu Domenech, our super attorneys Mr. Shahrokh Sheik Esq. and Mr. John Holcomb II Esq. of Kramer Holcomb Sheik LLP, leading music producer Mr. Qarim Brown and one of our most favorite Latin superstars Mr. Eduardo Verástegui ("Bella") - were all incredibly honored to be attending and supporting.
Jane's list of well known personalities who further joined in support was extensive and included the lovely Ms. Nia Vardalos ("My Big Fat Greek Wedding"), the vivacious Ms. Sofia Milos ("CSI: Miami"), Ms. Vassy Karagioros (recording artist), Ms. Antoinette Kalaj ("Pirates of the Caribbean"), Ms. Ellen Hollman ("Spartacus"), Mr. Gabriel Jarrett ("Frost/Nixon") and Mr. George Kotsiopoulos ("Fashion Police").
Her Majesty Queen Anne-Marie and HRH Princess Theodora of Greece said "We were delighted to attend such a wonderful event for such a worthy cause, and we hope more light can be shed on the issues that so many Greeks are having to face at the moment."
Jane mentioned that this is the first of many events planned in the future, intending to unite West Coast Greeks and “Philhellenes” to the common goal of supporting all Greeks effected and suffering due to the financial crisis.
HIRH Archduchess Jacquelyn Habsburg-Lothringen of Austria, agreed saying "The evening was captivating and demonstrated the extraordinary strength and compassion of the Greek community in Los Angeles, who clearly support the citizens of Greece during this difficult time."
HE Countess Kathryn D. Marenzi further commented, "Being of Greek and Cypriot descent, I felt a particular closeness to the striking issues that were presented by "Praksis"; a preeminent philanthropic organization. As part of the Greek community, we hope to bring more awareness and resources to those in need."
