Keynotes Program will feature the first annual Hope Flies Health Series presented by the Foundation for Mitochondrial Disease on Thursday November 8, 2012. The first guest to speak will be actress, talk show host, author, philanthropist Holly Robinson Peete speaking about her personal story of her father’s battle with Parkinson’s and her son’s journey with Autism.
Speakers from May Clinic, Georgia State University, Harvard Medical School, Medical Neurogenics Lab
The connection between the three diseases is the issue; Laura Stanley Executive Director for Foundation of Mitochondrial Medicine is looking to bring the latest knowledge and research and further understanding to the public and helping to understand the common connection in the diseases and other related diseases.
What is Mitochondrial Disease
Diseases resulting in failures of the mitochondria, special compartments present in every cell of the body except the red blood cells. Mitochondria are responsible for the energy to support life and growth. When this fails, the cells fail to support life and whole systems begin to fail, death can be a result. The life of the person is compromised. The disease is primarily found in children but is becoming more and more prevalent in adults. The kidneys, brain, liver, skeletal, endocrine and respiratory systems get the most damage.
Teachings about the mitochondria over simplify and say that they are only the energy component of each cell, which has also slowed the research down. It takes 3000 genes to make one mitochondria. Mitochondrial DNA encodes 37 of these genes the rest of the genes are encoded in the cell nucleus and proteins of the mitochondria. 100 out of the 3000 are for making energy the rest is the result of what the cell is designed to function as. These duties change as you develop and grow. The mitochondria are what the cell uses to build and breakdown recycling these building blocks. Cells can’t function without mitochondria and RNA and DNA they need to grow and function.
Mitochondria are used for cholesterol metabolism, estrogen and testosterone synthesis, neurotransmitter metabolism, free radical production and detoxification. All this and they are also responsible for breaking down the protein, fat and carbohydrates you eat and drink
Mitochondrial diseases are the result on inherited or spontaneous mutations in the mtDNA or the nDNA.
