While we are still recovering from economic woes, there is good news for travelers this holiday season. The cost of travel is significantly lower than it was last year. Though the trend has typically been that lowest rates have been found in the month of September, this season seems to have changed that pattern. Because 60% of holiday travelers have not yet booked their travels you can still find many deals that are cost effective.
By using Farecompare.com, I was able to track fares through the months of September and October, and though the prices have fluctuated by as little as ten to as much as forty dollars, the usual holiday cost spike is the only part of the planning that appears to be missing.
As you start tracking you’ll notice wild swings in prices depending on what day you want to depart and return. It shouldn’t come as a big surprise that everyone wants leave and return on the same days. Airlines have been studying these habits for years and price their seats accordingly.
Be aware that non-stop flights price at 2 and 3 times the premium, so if you want to get to your destination the cheapest way possible, be prepared to take a connecting flight.
Remember that these deals are available now, and might not be in the coming days as flights and hotels begin to fill up for the holiday. You can always book now, and use yapta.com to track your fare, if the fare goes down, you can get a rebate on the difference of what you paid from the lower fare.

I hadn't heard of Yapta. Thanks for the tip!
Yapta.com and farecompare.com are new sites for me to explore! Thanks for writing a very helpful article...
It's great news that the holiday travel prices are lower this year. My parents got a great price from PHX to IAH in December.
please keep us updated. don't know whether to book now or later.
Thanks for bringing farecompare to my attention. Another great tip.
I didn't know about FareCompare of Yapts. Thanks for bringing them to my attention.
I didn't know about the web sites you mentioned, and really appreciate the information. Thanks, Jenn.
The prices are lower, but the fees will kill you. Gotta travel smart, either on Southwest with no bag fees or JetBlue where one bag is free. The others will nickel and dime you to death making your seemingly inexpensive ticket rather costly. Good article!
Thanks for all the useful tips you provide in your articles. Well done.
