During this holiday season so many people cannot even sleep. Did you know that 70 million people in the United States have insomnia? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that is the latest statistic for 2013.

Why are people not sleeping when they have diabetes? Usually at night the individual has a low blood sugar and they awaken since the brain needs glucose. If this is not treated immediately with some form of sugar the person will die. However, if someone eats sugary and high carbohydrate foods it will be difficult to fall asleep. Also, a late night dinner can keep you awake all night.

Of course, there are numerous reasons why people have insomnia. Stress from work, financial, or family problems can keep a person from falling asleep at night. Your sleeping environment should be totally dark with no bright lights from cell phones, computers, TV, alarm clocks, night lights, etc. Make sure your bedroom is a cool, dark and peaceful sanctuary where you can relax and fall asleep.

Do not consume caffeine unless you want to be up all night. Also, if your diet is deficient in certain key nutrients you’ll not be able to sleep either. The B vitamins are essential for adequate sleep. B6 is vital in the production of serotonin while calcium is necessary in the production of melatonin. In addition, magnesium relaxes the muscles so you can sleep. If you’re a woman your hormone levels need to be balanced otherwise, you’ll not be able to sleep at night. Hormone levels can change due to lack of sleep, pregnancy, menstrual cycles, and menopause. In addition, check your blood sugar before going to bed and make sure it is not too high or low.

If you’re still not sleeping at night see your doctor to make sure you do not have sleep apnea as this is linked to obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

There are numerous natural ways to assist you with a good night’s sleep. Herbs that can be used are passionflower, chamomile, and valerian root.

Well, it’s evening for me….that means avoid computer screen time before my bedtime.

Have a healthy holiday season….there’s no reason to worry about what Santa will be giving you for Christmas unless you have been naughty and not nice.
