Holiday shows happening this week in Grand Rapids

The snow is falling, temperatures are dropping and Black Friday is behind us. It’s time for holiday fun in Grand Rapids. Here are some events to help the visitor or local get into the Christmas spirit.

One of the more unique holiday events takes place Sunday, December 15 at Riverside Park in Grand Rapids. The Whoville 5K harkens back to the Dr. Seuss classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. Instead of carving the roast beast, area runners will hoof it through Riverside Park to a Whovian finish line complete with hot chocolate and chocolate fountains. If this one is anything like the first two years you should be able to spot plenty of costumed characters on the course. The race starts at 10:00 a.m.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra has been touring the world with their Christmas themed rock opera for 15 years. They make their annual Grand Rapids stop on December 15 for two shows; 3:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in VanAndel Arena. TSO will be giving their final performances of 'The Lost Christmas Eve' on this tour. The show is musically and visually stunning and a must see holiday concert.

Although not technically a Christmas show, the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre is presenting “The Sound of Music” through December 15. The stage play is similar to the famous movie but with new scenes and new songs. The all-local cast does a marvelous job and the singing of Darla Wortley as Mother Abbess is worth the price of admission. Show times are 7:30 p.m. on December 11, 12 & 13, 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on December 14 and 2:00 p.m. on December 15.

Just for laughs on Saturday night head over to the River City Improv’s Ho-Ho-Holiday show. This is the 20th year for this local comedy group and they are just as funny as ever. The jokes start at 7:33 p.m. (that’s not a typo) on December 14 at the Ladies Literary Club, 61 Sheldon Boulevard in Grand Rapids.
