Holiday safety in Gainesville, Florida.

Being during the holiday season we sometimes forget simple things that can protect us or loved ones from crime. Safety during the holiday season is extremely important. We are so busy with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season that we don’t think about how easy it is for predators to take advantage of us when we let our guard down or forget to do simple things like lock our doors or get easily distracted while in a crowd and someone grabs our wallet or purse.

These are some simple tips that will keep you and your family safe during the holiday season and any time of the year.

  • Lock your home when you are gone or even when you are at home.
  • Lock your car doors even when you are just running in for a quick stop.
  • Secure items of value out of sight such as the trunk of your vehicle.
  • Make sure your cell phone is charged in case of an emergency.
  • Keep wallets in front pants pockets when possible or securely in your purse.
  • When possible travel in groups.
  • When taking a trip to the mall or shopping center in the evening, park under a well-lit area.
  • Try to avoid parking so far away from a shopping center or mall entrance. If you must shop in the evening, don’t wait until the stores or mall are ready to close leave at a decent time so you are not the only one walking to your car in a vacant parking lot.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings, avoid texting and cell phone conversation if you are alone and walking to your car.
  • Keep your credit card numbers and debit bank card numbers and phone numbers in case your card is lost or stolen. Call the company immediately if you suspect your card is missing. It is better to be safe than sorry.
  • If you are being pulled over by someone and you have any suspicion that the officer is not really a police officer (e.g., you were pulled over by an unmarked car), ask politely to see the officer's photo identification and badge. If you still are unsure, you can ask that officer to call a supervisor to the scene or you can request that you be allowed to follow the officer to a police station.
  • Do not let delivery people into your home.
  • Avoid shortcuts through wooded areas, parking lots or alleys.
  • Take the safest route to and from schools, stores or your friends’ houses.
  • Know where to go if you need help.
  • If you think someone is following you, switch directions or cross the street - If they are still there, move quickly toward an open store, restaurant or a lighted house.
  • Don’t be afraid to yell for help.
