Holiday panic at local mall

See also

Everyone knows that during the holiday season, shopping malls can be a bit hectic and crazy.

Well, in addition to the regular craziness of the shopping season, one local shopping mall saw a bit more than its share earlier this week, when a shoplifting incident sparked a panic.

On Christmas Eve, an alleged shoplifter knocked over a display at the Macy's in Garden City's Roosevelt Field Mall . The sound of the display falling set off a panic, when mall patrons and workers thought gun shots had been fired. The panic led to shoppers fleeing the mall in a hurry, which in turn led to several injuries. A traffic jam also ensued, as shoppers attempted to flee. The mall then closed for a very brief time, while the issue was sorted out.

The accused shoplifter whose actions set off the panic in the mall has been charged.

Fortunately, there was really no shooting at Roosevelt Field on Christmas Eve. However, there have been several recent high-profile shootings across the country, including a recent shooting at a mall near San Diego.
