Think gorgeous tree, fun holiday windows, delightful musicals and a giant snow globe to get into the holiday spirit. There’s no need to look further than the Chicago area for fun holiday outings. And you can start looking now.
Even though Chicago has traditionally started the season around Thanksgiving, some events, such as Macy’s tree lighting and holiday windows, have moved up their dates and others, such as Marriott Theatre, had their holiday season “Mary Poppins” and “The Nutcracker” shows already on the schedule. In addition, the Adler Planetarium starts its “Season of Wonder” that includes a giant snow globe, mid-November.
Beginning when the landmark department store at State and Randolph was Marshall Field and Company, a trip to see its animated story-telling windows and its tall tree in the Walnut Room was a holiday tradition. Macy’s, which bought the Field chain, has continued the tradition and even moved the window unveiling earlier. As of Nov. 2, a trip downtown Chicago in 2013 can include a stop outside Macy’s to see what story unfolds this year and inside the store to gape at the Great Tree on the 7th floor Walnut Room. Reservations are needed to eat in the Walnut Room.
In addition, Santa Claus will be in his 5th floor “Santaland” weekends now through Thanksgiving, then daily through Dec. 23. If there on a Saturday afternoon, stop on 5th floor for face painting and an “animaloon” (balloon shape). For more information visit Macy’s.
At the southern edge of downtown, the Adler Planetarium opens its “Season of Wonder” with a snow globe experience at the end of every Grainger Sky Theater show beginning Nov. 15 and continuing through Jan. 5, 2014. For more information visit Adler Planetarium or call 312-922-7827. The Adler Planetarium is on the Museum Campus at 1300 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, IL.
Up in the northern suburbs, “Mary Poppins” and “The Nutcracker” are fun holiday shows at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire. Youngsters and likely, oldsters, will be leaving “Mary Poppins” singing “Supercalifragilistic” now through Jan 5. 2014. “The Nutcracker,” a show geared to young audiences, opens Nov. 8 and runs through Dec. 28, 2013.
For more information and tickets visit Marriott Theatre or call 847-634-0200. Marriott Theatre is at 10 Marriott Drive, Lincolnshire, IL 60069 at Milwaukee Avenue at Illinois Highway 22.
