Every caregiver should buy one present for themselves this holiday season. We can spend as little or as much as we want on this gift. This is a gift which will facilitate self-care. It is a bag to place some items in for a quick getaway. The size would be about the size of a reusable grocery bag primarily cloth bag and handles. You can of course use any kind of bag you wish, just be sure that it will be convenient to get to and easily carried.
Now, place inside tea or coffee, perhaps even soda for if we should get thirsty. Next a couple of small snacks that will keep until we are going to want them, granola bars are good, nuts or crackers always seem to be favorites. Put in a blanket or throw for either warmth or to place on the ground in the summer time, and add to that a hat, maybe even some gloves; and last put in a book, deck of cards or magazine which we can use to get away from the caregiving world. One item might be a travel magazine to dream of a trip to be taken sometime in the future or a nice novel which would provide some escape from the otherwise world of caregiving.
Now that everything is together, wrap it up and put it in holiday package form. By giving ourselves this gift to be opened at the time we open our holiday gifts, we are giving our selves permission for this kind of get away. And if ever there was a person who need a getaway it is a caregiver. Try to remember that taking care of ourselves is truly taking care of our special friend. Without us they would not be able to live the current life they have.
