The year is rapidly drawing to a close, with a long holiday season (thanks to the month-long gap between Hanukkah and Christmas), early winter storms across much of the country, and a toast to the New Year in our very near future. In case you didn't get what you asked for this holiday season, Nespresso—the automated home espresso machine and coffee company that regularly tempt you through the captivating eyes of Penelope Cruz—is offering yet another giveaway, this time for its newest machines, the Nespresso UMilk.
This year, Nespresso expanded its portfolio with the stylish "U" range, featuring the UMat and UMilk lines. At a holiday promotional event earlier this fall, "Project Runway" host (and Nespresso spokesperson) Tim Gunn said, "I have a machine at home, but now I'm wishing I had the UMilk! It's so perfectly designed."
While all of the Nespresso machines contain the same basic pump and pressure mechanisms inside to create a delicious cup of coffee consistently each time, and each allows you to customize the pour—from small ristrettos through espressos and larger, "Lungo" American-style coffees—to your exact specifications, each machine is also unique in its design and features.
In the case of the U series, it's the clean modernist design, fully automated pours, two color finishes (Pure Black and Pure Cream), and (for the UMilk) and an "integrated" milk frothing "solution" (that is, it comes with an Aeroccino milk frother attached, rather than having to purchase a separate piece of equipment. Froth hot or cold milk a little or a lot, to layer on top of the espresso style, variation or flavor of your choice.
Speaking of variations, the limited-edition holiday capsule release this winter is Masala Chai, an aromatic, spice-noted espresso with hints of cinnamon, clove and star anise. You can read our review here, but suffice to say, the subtle baking spice notes come to the fore beautifully when mixed with milk, chocolate or cream liqueurs. We've included a recipe below specifically crafted for the Masala Chai capsules.
