The Holiday in Dixie festival in Shreveport, a celebration of the Louisiana Purchase, marks the beginning of the spring season and the promise of warmer weather. Held each year at Festival Plaza in the heart of downtown, it is the most anticipated festival of the year, reminding us that old Father Winter is departing us in exchange for warmer temperatures and spring fever.
The festival was first held in 1949 and was a five day pageant called "Salute to the Southland" and depicted the early history of Shreveport. Activities will include live music, vendors, games, arts and crafts, delicious carnival food and fantastic rides, as well as the annual KTBS 3 Holiday in Dixie Treasure Hunt. The treasure hunt will begin today with the first clue to be released live on KTBS news during the 10 pm broadcast. Treasure hunters can sign up at KTBS.com to receive the clues in advance of the broadcast announcement. The winner of the treasure hunt will receive a big cash prize of $1,500.
The festival will run from April 11-20; ten days of family fun is certain. The parade will be Saturday, April 12th, 2014 at 5:30 pm in downtown Shreveport beginning at the Municipal Auditorium and heading east on Milam, north on Market, then west on Texas. The parade has been unique to the Shreveport – Bossier area for 66 years and continues the tradition of family fun featuring Shriner’s clowns and cars, classic convertibles, fire trucks, the National Guard, Bossier City Marshals and Fire Departments, local school marching bands, six floats and more. Once again there will be tons of “throws”, cups and candy showering the crowds that line the streets.
