Holiday desserts: Seven layer bar recipe

Seven Layer Bars

Butter, graham crackers, chocolate chips, peanut butter chips, walnuts, coconut and sweetened condensed milk. Those ingredients make up the seven luscious layers of a seven layer bar, also known as a magic cookie bar. With the holidays around the corner, this dessert bar is quick, simple and always a crowd pleaser.

Seven layer bars are so simple to make, it’s almost unheard of. No bowls, mixers and utensils necessary. A recipe isn’t even required either. All you need is a 9x13-inch glass baking dish, an oven and the ingredients at hand. After the graham cracker crust is made, the remaining ingredients are sprinkled generously, but evenly, over the top. This is a great dessert to make and enjoy with children.

The Norfolk Wal-Mart has the cheapest prices hands down for all baking ingredients. The store brand products are just as good as the expensive name brand too! They even sell a large box of graham cracker crumbs for a little over a dollar.

Seven Layer Bars
  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 ½ cups peanut butter chips
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • 1 ½ cups sweetened coconut flakes
  • 1 14oz can sweetened condensed milk

Preheat an oven to 350 degrees.
Place the butter in a 9x13-inch glass baking dish and let melt in the oven. Carefully remove the dish from the oven and stir in the graham cracker crumbs. Once the crumbs are moist, press them evenly into the bottom of the dish.
Sprinkle the chocolate chips, then the peanut butter chips, walnuts and coconut over the crust. Pour the contents of the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the top of the whole dessert.
Bake the bars for about 18-20 minutes. The top will be bubbly and the coconut and condensed milk should be light golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool.

It’s best to cut these when they are slightly cool from the refrigerator. As you can see, you really don’t need a recipe – just layer the ingredients as you see fit

Claudia - they are a tradition in my family too!
Rachel - these are extremely indulgent, but it's ok right? It's the holidays!
Andrea - you wish. You're not that inept, go make some for your college roommates :)

What can you substitute for coconut? No one in my household likes that.

Priestess - I would try substituting rolled oats for the coconut. The flavor would be a little different, but you would get the same chewy texture that the coconut gives. If that's a no-go, I would just substitute another chip, like butterscotch chips, and make it ultra gooey. :)

No Fair Kristen!! Too easy, and too good! Nice job.

Another idea, since coconut is essentially a dried fruit, why not use another dried fruit such as banana chips or whatever you like.
