When it’s just too cold to play outside or when waiting for the real snow to arrive seems interminable, these wintry stars and icicles can help kids pass the time and play make believe. Holiday crafts are a great way to spend time with the kids and enjoy the season together. Pipe cleaners are almost always on hand in everyone’s craft supply stash. If you don’t have some at home, pick some up the next time you have the chance. A handful of these will brighten a child’s afternoon and adorn your home for the rest of the winter season

Pipe cleaners are available in many colors, thicknesses and lengths. Though pipe cleaners of any size and color will work, metallic colors and bright white are the most festive. Let the children choose the colors for their star and icicle ornament display. These can be hung on a tree or a garland for a wintry look anywhere. They can dangle in front of windows to brighten a gray winter day, the perfect activity during the holidays.

Kids’ crafts should be easy and nothing is easier than this star ornament. Hold one end of a pipe cleaner firmly against a paint brush. Wind the rest of it tightly around the handle. When the full length of the pipe cleaner has been wrapped, pull it off the handle. Hold both ends of the pipe cleaner and gently stretch it to make it a little longer. Repeat this process until you have ten curly-cued pipe cleaners. You can make them all one color or use two or three colors to add some pizzazz to your star ornament.

Place a thin piece of string on your work surface. Do not cut it yet. Place ten pipe cleaners on top and tie a knot in the middle of the pipe cleaners. Cut the string, leaving enough length to tie a knot in the top of the string and make a loop to hang your star. Bend all the pipe cleaners away from each other in different directions for a star burst effect.

Directions for Making an Icicle Ornament

Bend the tip of the pipe cleaner. Wrap the pipe cleaner around itself, making a flat spiral. Hold the outside of the spiral and pull the middle out to form an icicle. Tie a piece of thread around the wider end of the icicle and tie a loop. Hang your icicle up.

Crafts for kids don’t have to be elaborate or expensive. Simple decorations not only give kids enjoyment but a sense of accomplishment. And with pipe cleaners, there’s very little mess to clean up afterwards – every moms favorite part of craft projects!
