If you are on the hunt for a sophisticated cocktail for your upcoming holiday party, consider the gin sage martini. Composed of a honeyed sage tea and fresh-squeezed red grapefruit juice, this subtle sipper features notes of licorice, citrus and clove . Light yet complex, the gin sage martini makes the perfect aperitif as it complements appetizers and tapas as well as the lighter fare typical of cocktail parties.

Far from its ill-reputed image, gin is more akin to vodka's bohemian cousin than its rough-and-tumble twin. Infused with exotic botanicals such as cardamom, clove, citrus and lavender, gin adds complexity and subtlety to combinations typically assigned to vodka. By imparting delicate notes of spice and citrus, gin-based cocktails tend to encourage slowing down and sipping so that its botanical touches can bloom.

If the idea of a pine bite still unnerves you, consider that not all gins are crafted in the popular London style which focuses on the juniper punch. Plymouth Gin is one such selection. Downplaying the juniper berries and highlighting the botanicals, Plymouth Gin is a smooth, round, less dry gin that partners perfectly with fresh juices, floral components and herbaceous liquors. In the gin sage martini, Plymouth gin contributes gentle notes of citrus, lavender and clove.

For the sage tea:

  • 1 1/4 cups water
  • 6 large sage leaves
  • 1 teaspoon honey (1 1/2 if you have a sweet tooth)

In a tea kettle or small sauce pan, bring the water to a rolling boil then remove from the heat. Pour the water into a measuring cup that contains the sage leaves.  Let steep for four to five minutes. Remove the sage leaves and stir in the honey. Allow to cool.

For the Martini:

  • 1 1/2 oz. Plymouth Gin
  • 1 1/2 oz. sage tea
  • 1/2 oz. fresh squeezed red grapefruit juice
  • 1 lemon twist to garnish

In a cocktail shaker packed with ice, add the gin, sage tea and grapefruit juice. Shake until very cold (when the cold begins to bother your hand, you know it is perfect). Strain the ingredients in a chilled martini glass. Garnish with twist of lemon and one small leaf of sage.

Cheer to you and yours this holiday season!

Plymouth gin is available locally at most fine liquor stores including Sunset Corners Wines & Liquors, ABC Liquors and Total Wine and Liquors.
