With the holidays comes stress in what to buy, who to visit, and of course, what to wear. There will be work parties, parties at friend's houses, formal events, and various other gatherings you may be invited to this year.  It is very important to know the appropriate outfit to wear based on the event you are invited to.  Keeping in mind that something you wear around friends and family, may not be the same thing as what you wear at a work party, is the first thing to remember.  The next thing is what type of party exactly that you are invited to.  Whether it is a private party or for work, the type of party that is specified is very important to pay attention to.

The casual party, whether it is for work or for friends and family, you may want to rethink wearing jeans and a t-shirt.  A nice pair of pants or dark wash jeans and a festive sparkly top would be perfect.  A dress with heels and an updo would definitely be over dressed.  Whenever someone invites you with a vague description of  what casual is, when in doubt, the dark pants or jeans and top combination is always appropriate to wear.

The cocktail party is all about sophistication.  Now, cocktail can mean different things to different people.  Wearing a short dress with or without tights is definitely always a great choice.  You will not look too dressed up or down.  If you wear a little black dress, just make sure you add some interesting accessories.  After all, it is the holidays and you want to be festive--not just blend in with everyone else.  If the cocktail party specifies a theme, go along with it.  Whether it be the 60s or the 20s, nothing is more fun than dressing up in a vintage outfit and having some drinks.  If the cocktail party specifies that it is formal, you may want to wear a bit of a longer hemline dress if you like short dresses and put your hair up in a more formal way, if you were planning on wearing it down.  The best thing about the cocktail party is that unless it is specified as causal, you can never look too overdressed--as long as you don't go in with a long ball gown.  You should be wearing nice clothes, though.  After all, it's a celebration.  You should be dressing the part during the holiday season.

Below, you will see a list of clothing pieces that you can wear to a party for work, family and friends, whether the event is casual or a cocktail party.  Always, stay true to your personal style.  Have fun shopping everyone.
