The BSO welcomes the 2010 holiday season with a variety of events.
On Friday, December 3, 2010 at 7:30 PM, enjoy the beautiful and inspirational music of Handel's Messiah.
'Handel, upon reading these Scriptures from the Old and New Testaments (compiled by a friend) (August, 1741) was overcome by their power. The music began dancing and exploding within him. He immediately shut himself in and worked night and day, often forgetting to eat. The servants could, from time to time, hear his sobs as he labored over the inspired text. He finished the original libretto and score in twenty-four days. A complete musical performance requires nearly three hours; the Scripture texts, thirty minutes. Read these as Handel did and you will experience God and eternity.'
The BSO's Holiday Spectacular runs from Friday, December 10 through Sunday, December 19, 2010.
Academy Award winner, Maureen McGovern hosts and performs at the Vegas-style show along with 'a chorus line of Rhinestone Santas, dancing dogs and all your favorite holiday tunes.'
'The Muscular Dystrophy Association has awarded its highest philanthropic achievement honor - the MDA Director's Award - to entertainer and Academy Award-winning singer Maureen McGovern.
MDA Chairman of the Board R. Rodney Howell, M.D., presented the star-shaped Stueben Glass Award to McGovern at a group dinner preceding the Association's annual meeting in Los Angeles. Upon receiving the news, the Ohio native and 30-year MDA volunteer delighted the audience with an a cappella song about gratitude, friendship and her MDA family.'
Also appearing, special guest Martin Preston as he portrays his tribute to legendary musician Liberace.
