The holiday season is busy, bright, and full of hope. For some families this is the time to add a furry family member. Humane associations try very hard to place needy pets before the holidays.

Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association will be hosting an adoptathon 12/15/2012 beginning at 12:00:00 PM. The shelter is open that day until 6pm, however adopters are encouraged to start the adoption process at least one hour before closing. There will be $5.00 reduction in the adoption fee on this day. "Gold" (senior) pets are always half-price. This shelter has many pets available for adoption.

Some pets are in foster care through a local organization Dog Bless.

Opening a home to a shelter pet is a generous act, however caution should be used when adding a pet during the holidays. Common sense dictates that a pet from the shelter may be a little cautious with new people. Give your new family member a safe place away from all the noise and visiting people. If you wish to introduce your new pet to extended family do so in groups of 1 or 2 people at a time with a break in between so the new pet does not feel overcrowded or anxious.

Be aware that a home has many hazards for pets during the holiday season. Delicious food, shiny decorations, and increased foot traffic in and out of doors all can create a dangerous environment for a pet.

If a pet is added to the family please keep in mind that this is a long-term commitment. Many pets can live 10 to 15 years. That is many holiday seasons to enjoy with your new furry family member.
