'Holiday'- a New Year's classic

As the new year draws near, and First Night Akron seems to draw closer and closer, a lot of times for those who do not want to party hearty downtown or otherwise, usually watch a film before the New Year commences.

A perfect film to watch is 1938's Holiday starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn, and Lew Ayres. The film takes place around Christmas time, and Johnny Case (Grant) is looking to meet his fiance, Julia Seton (Doris Nolan) at her house in Manhattan. Johnny enters through the kitchen to find that he entered into the wrong side, and the butler escorts him to the front of the house, which he is amazed at the size of. Johnny sees Ned Seaton ( Ayres) descend from the staircase, trying to recall the night before and telling of today's plans. He then sees Julia, who tells her that he got his times mixed up. As they embrace, they both meet Linda Seton (Hepburn), who is amazed at him. While Julia figures out the best way to approach the matter, Linda chats with Johnny and finds out who he is. She likes him. He talks of his idea of finding fulfillment in life and wanting to retire early after working all his life. The idea fascinates Linda as it reminds her of her grandfather. Afterwards, Linda tells Julia that she found the right man, and that she wants to throw an engagement party for her. Unfortunately, Edward Seton (Henry Kolker) puts the kibosh on it and grills Johnny. On New Year's Eve, Linda refuses to come down and celebrate, and Julia sends Johnny up to get her. Needless to say, Linda has occupied and found friendship with Johnny's friends, the Potters (Edward Everett Horton and Jean Dixon), who shake off his pristine for nice festivities. When Edward and Julia come in, they bring Linda to task and Edward offers Johnny a bank job. Johnny refuses and Julia fights to convince him otherwise. In the meantime, Linda's affections for Johnny grows.
