A Bit About Holden Arboretum One of the largest arboretums and botanical gardens in America, the Holden Arboretum was founded in 1931 after the bequest by Cleveland mining engineer and executive Albert Fairchild Holden and today it is dedicated to education and conservation of plant life with special interest in those plants native to the state of Ohio.

Comprised of over 3500 acres, Holden Arboretum has devoted 600 of those acres to gardens and plant collections with over 9400 different kinds of woody plants representing 74 plant families. The rest of the acreage contains diverse natural areas and habitats that are ecologically sensitive and are maintained in a natural state.

The Arboretum also has numerous specialty gardens including the Helen S. Layer Rhododendron Garden, the Myrtle S. Holden Wildflower Garden and the Arlen and Arthur Holden, Jr., Butterfly Garden.

In addition, Holden Arboretum has miles of trails for hiking pleasure geared to all skill levels.
