The Hofstra University women’s basketball team earned a 68-61 victory Sunday afternoon over CAA rival Drexel University at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
The Pride improves to 15-5 on the year and 7-2 in CAA conference play, while the Dragons fall to 10-9 (6-3 CAA).
Hofstra sophomore guard Katelyn Loper led the team with 21 points and added seven rebounds. Junior All-American forward Shante Evans tallied nine points and 12 rebounds.
Evans’ streak of 31 straight games with at least 10 points came to an end. The streak was the fifth-longest in the nation heading into Sunday’s game.
Though these two players had a strong showing offensively, it was the Pride’s defense that was the difference in the victory. Hofstra opened the second half on a 23-8 run, including the first 10 points of the half, which lasted nearly 12 minutes.
The Drexel shooters opened the game with the hot hands from outside—shooting 46.2 percent from the field in the first half—which gave the Dragons a 37-29 lead at the break.
Senior guard Candice Bellocchio had another strong all-around performance for the Pride, finishing the contest with 13 points, four assists and three rebounds. Junior forward Candace Bond recorded two steals, which places her ninth place all-time in Hofstra program history.
The Pride will look to continue their winning ways Thursday when the team hosts William and Mary at 7 p.m.
