The Hofstra University men’s basketball put up a valiant effort against the No. 1 CAA ranked George Mason Patriots, but the Pride fell just short, 55-50, Wednesday evening at the Mack Sports Complex in Hempstead, N.Y.
Hofstra was down by eight points in the second half, but the team cut the deficit to tie the score with just under two minutes to play. However, George Mason’s Sherrod Wright drained a clutch three-pointer to give the Patriots the lead to stay. Wright scored 15 points off the bench in the contest.
George Mason (17-5, 9-1 CAA) maintains its hold on first place in the CAA with the victory. Hofstra meanwhile continues to struggle in conference play, falling to 1-9 (7-15 overall).
The Patriots’ bench outscored the Pride bench, 36-6, which wound up being a major factor in the final decision.
Senior guard Mike Moore scored 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field. He added six assists as well.
Pride senior forward Nathaniel Lester added 12 points, while junior forward David Imes tallied nine points and five rebounds.
Hofstra played an overall strong defensive game, holding George Mason’s leading scorer Ryan Pearson—averaging more than 17 points per game—to just seven points. The Patriots shot just 31.9 percent from the field.
Hofstra will look for a bounce back performance Saturday afternoon on the road against Northeastern.
