Frankly speaking, kayaks as fishing vessels are no longer a secret. Especially for saltwater anglers, the word has been out for some years now. These versatile paddle boats are perfect for plying the shallow flats where bigger vessels can’t go. But, they also have proven able to stand the challenges of catching even offshore species of fish.
All of that said, there are still new worlds to conquer in the field of kayak fishing boats. And the folks at Hobie always seem to be riding the crest of that wave and making kayaks suited to all anglers.
The latest of these is the Hobie Mirage Sport. While kayak fishing boats have been adding more and more features and gear, those type models also have been getting bigger and heavier. On the other hand, the Mirage Sport is ideal for the single angler who needs a really portable boat.
At 9 feet, 7 inches long with a 29 ½-inch width this boat is quite compact. Even better, the vessel tips the scales at just 53 pounds. Even fully equipped, the boat weights just a tad more than 66 pounds.
Its size makes it ideal for carrying in the back of a pickup truck, and light weight makes car top transport a breeze as well.
The Mirage Sport features rugged rotomolded polyethylene construction and being in Hobie’s Mirage line of boats, it comes with the hands-free MirageDrive pedal system. It also has the twist and stow rudder and a two-piece stow aboard paddle for emergency use. A pair of molded rod holders and two twist and seal hatches make the boat angler friendly.
Whether you are headed back in the mangroves for snook, or out on a shell and grass flat for redfish and seatrout, the Hobie Mirage Sport looks like a winner for portability and function.
