According to the Western Hockey League website, the 2014 Western Hockey League playoffs will start on Thursday night from the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary when the Calgary Hitmen host the Kootenay Ice.

The Hitmen were ranked second in the WHL's Central Division this season with 103 points. They were actually tied with the division leading Edmonton Oil Kings, but the Hitmen's provincial rivals had two more victories.

Due to the fact the Hitmen did not win their division, they will be seeded third in the opening round even though they had 18 more points than the Eastern Division leading Regina Pats.

Jake Virtanen led the Hitmen this season with 45 goals, while Brady Brassart and Greg Chase each led the Hitmen with 50 assists and 85 points.

The top player for the Ice is Sam Reinhart, who was fourth in WHL scoring this season with 105 points. That is impressive because he missed a substantial amount of time while playing for Canada at the 2014 World Junior Hockey Championship.
