Hitmen open WHL playoffs with win over Broncos

According to TSN, the Calgary Hitmen opened the 2013 Western Hockey League playoffs with a 6-5 overtime win over the Swift Current Broncos at the Scotiabank Saddledome Thursday night in Calgary.

Defenceman Alex Roach of Schongan, Germany, scored the game winning goal from Pavlo Padakin and Calder Brooks.

The Hitmen now lead the Eastern Conference quarterfinal series 1-0 with game two of the series scheduled for tonight.

It was a strong night for Hitmen right winger Brady Brassart of Vernon, British Columbia. Brassart, who is being considered in the 2013 National Hockey League Draft, recorded a hat trick for the Hitmen, with all three of his goals coming even strength.

Greg Chase and Jaynen Rissling also had multi-point games for the Hitmen with two assists each.

In other WHL playoff action, the Medicine Hat Tigers defeated the Saskatoon Blades 4-1 to take a 1-0 series lead. All of the other six series will open this evening.
