According to the Calgary Hitmen website on Wednesday, the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League have announced their regular season schedule for the 2014-15 season. The Hitmen, which will play in their 20th season in the Western Hockey League, will begin their season at the Scotiabank Saddledome on September 20 against the Red Deer Rebels.

There will be some interesting games on the Hitmen schedule. On Sunday, December 7, 2014, will be their annual Petro-Canada Teddy Bear Toss Game when the Hitmen host the Moose Jaw Warriors. Fans are encouraged to bring teddy bears and throw them on to the ice. The bears will be for disadvantaged children.

On Saturday, January 31, 2015, the Hitmen will host the defending Western Hockey League champion Edmonton Oil Kings on the same day the Calgary Flames will be hosting the Edmonton Oilers at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The matchup against the Oil Kings will be one of six games against their provincial rivals this season. The other dates will be Friday, December 5 and Wednesday, December 17.

The Hitmen will have their first three games at home and six of their first eight games at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Hitmen will also have 13 of 16 games at home from November 16-December 30.

A major reason why the Hitmen will be playing so may home games at the Scotiabank Saddledome in 2014 rather than 2015 is because the Scotiabank Saddledome will be the host venue of the Tim Horton's Brier from February 28-March 8. From February 20-March 14, the Hitmen will be playing on the road for a remarkable 11 straight contests.

In other local hockey news, the Vancouver Canucks have named former University of Calgary Dinos head coach Willie Desjardins as their new head coach this week. Desjardins coached the University of Calgary Dinos from 1989-1994.
