Hitler's bodyguard and one of the last to see him alive has died at the age of 96. Rochus Misch was Adolf Hitler's bodyguard, and he was present in the underground bunker when the Nazi leader and his girlfriend, Eva Braun, committed suicide. According to a Sept. 6 USA Today report, Misch always maintained that did not know anything about the Holocaust. In an interview conducted several years before his death, he claimed that the murder of 6 million Jews was never discussed in his presence.
Misch had stayed in the bunker until the very end of the Third Reich, referring to the site of the suicides as a 'coffin of concrete.' He remained there for a few days after the suicide, taking orders from Goebbels until he was encouraged to run for his freedom as the Soviets swarmed the area. He was captured by the Soviets and served 9 years in a Soviet prison before being released to return to Germany.
Interestingly, Misch was never anything but proud of his service to the SS as Hitler’s bodyguard. At one point, he was sending out autographed photos of himself in full Nazi regalia! Oddly enough, he received great amounts of fan mail.
