Ah, dear readers, I’ve missed you. And I’ve missed writing. But I’m back and I have so many great things to tell you about.
Today’s topic is for those of you who have been following along with my non-athletic self’s athletic adventures, those of you who are interested in the revival of the hula hoop craze, or those of you who just happen to be reading this article. You were with me through Roller Derby, which I am still minimally involved in and yet still a huge fan, and now I’m off on a new undertaking in which I invite you to join. I am starting a hula hoop class at the North Branford Community Center taught by the one and only Lady Blaze.
Sure I used to hula hoop when I was a kid, but that was a time long (long, long, long) ago. And I probably wasn’t even very good. However, that is not the point.
The first time I saw Lady Blaze (whom I have always known as LB) hoop, I was fascinated. Maybe some of you were even there. It was at Flux at Gotham Citi in New Haven. Ahh, the good ol’ days.
Anyhow, she came up on stage with not one, but multiple hula hoops and performed her graceful and extremely energetic act. At that moment, I knew that I wanted to try it. So one day while subbing for a gym class, I picked up a hula hoop and tried my hand (or hip) at being the next Lady Blaze and well . . . I’ll say it wasn't at total epic fail and I'll leave it at that.
Okay, so I know I’ll never be anywhere near as talented as LB and her hoop, but I will be able to experience the next best thing, which is to learn from her. The class she is offering is six weeks and will be held Fridays 6:30 to 7:30. The cost is only $30.
But what will the class offer exactly, you ask? From the Facebook event page:
Hula hooping is a new craze sweeping the nation, but this is not just a child’s toy anymore. Adult sized and weighted hoops make hooping easy, fun and a fantastic way to get fit and lose weight. Hoop workouts burns 300-600 calories an hour, are low-impact, reduce stress and help calm the mind. No hoop experience necessary and all body types welcome. Whether you are adding this to your existing weekly workout, looking for something new to do, or are looking to start getting fit, beginners hoop class is the work out you’ve been looking for.
This class will include stretching, core strengthening, dance, and flow. Don’t own a hoop? No problem! Borrow a hoop paired specifically for your body size. If you have your own hoop, bring it with you! Dress in comfortable clothes that will allow you to move freely.
For those of you who are interested in attending a class, but can’t make it on Friday evenings, Lady Blaze is also offering one at Go Green Fitness in Orange on Mondays, 4:30 to 5:30. This one runs through April 13 and price varies based on which package you choose at the center—packages give you access to a variety of classes, not just the hoop class.
In case there are some of you who remember hula hooping as a kid, but aren’t exactly sure why it can be so impressive and think I might be slightly exaggerating (as if!), I leave you with a video of Lazy Blaze doing her thing, and some photos too.
