With the possible exception of the storied old Cotton Bowl, the Capital One Bowl is the most prestigious of all the non-BCS games, and its current conference affiliations with the SEC and Big Ten gives this game one of the most attractive New Year's Day matchups each and every year. This year, the Big Ten representative is Wisconsin.
The Capital One Bowl is the first bowl to choose after the BCS has made its selections. For the Southeastern Conference, the runner up in the east, in this case, South Carolina was chosen. Missouri, which lost to Auburn in the SEC championship game, will play in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic against Oklahoma State of the Big 12.
The bowl was previously known as the Florida Citrus Bowl but has now taken on the name of its title sponsor, Capital One. The game pays out $4.5 million per year, more than any other non-BCS bowl. In 1991, the game played a part in the national championship that year as Georgia Tech defeated Nebraska 45-21 for a share of the national title. Nebraska lost to South Carolina in the Capital One Bowl two years ago.
The game is played at 1 p.m. on New Year's Day at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla.and can be seen locally on WOLO-TV (Time Warner channel 5 or 1105). GO COCKS!
