In a press release issued on Wednesday, April 16, Watkins Glen International announced that once again this year the MINI will serve as the official pace car of the Glenora Wine Cellars United States Vintage Grand Prix presented by Welliver. The event is slated for September 5-7.

Cars for the vintage weekend will be provided by MINI USA, MINI of Rochester and Towne MINI, according to WGI. According to MINI, the little British car has a history that made it a favorite among many enthusiasts.

"It was 1961 when the humble little people-mover fell into the hands of British racing legend John Cooper. A more powerful engine, bigger brakes and a few tuning tweaks later, the Classic Mini Cooper 997 was introduced. And a rally demon was born," reads a section on the car's history.

The Glenora Wine Cellars U.S. Vintage Grand Prix presented by Welliver festivities begin on Friday, with the Grand Prix Festival in the village and a race re-enactment on the original 6.6-mile street course.

The action returns to Watkins Glen International Saturday and Sunday with historic cars from a number of different series taking on the iconic twists of The Glen. Qualifying sessions and races bring action to the track all day both days.

Advance tickets are $45 for the weekend and $30 for Sunday-only.
