Speaking about his newly created motor sport event for racers and other historic and vintage car enthusiasts in a press release on Sunday, March 30, Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, the Earl of March and Kinrara, known as Lord March for short, dubbed this weekend at Goodwood a "sensational" event. He praised, in particular, the diversity of cars that members of the Goodwood Road Racing Club brought to the spring party he hosted at his estate in southern England.

Goodwood's press release called the weekend the "most significant new historic motor sport event in 15 years."

For his part, Lord March was pleased with how the inaugural run of his new party turned out: “What a fantastic way to kick off this new event," he said. "The sensational selection of cars and drivers is just about the most diverse we’ve ever had at Goodwood Motor Circuit. From some of the most beautiful 1960s sportscars ever designed to the quite incredible noise of the turbo Formula 1 machines... And all in an intimate environment that allowed everyone to become a part of it themselves."

According to Goodwood, the weekend brought over 400 cars to the popular British circuit. Stars among the cars and the opportunities to compete included Formula 1 turbo-charged machines -- featuring several ex-Ayrton Senna Lotuses and Tolemans – a display of iconic Le Mans 24 Hours racers, the world’s largest Bugatti-only race (over 25), and the first race to ever feature 1980s cars at Goodwood – The Gerry Marshall Trophy.

Stars in the form of people attending the 72nd Members' Meeting included Formula 1 legend Sir Stirling Moss as an avid spectator; DJ, Chris Evans; Olympic cyclist, Sir Chris Hoy; international model, David Gandy; and celebrity chef, James Martin. Martin raced his 1963 Morris Mini Cooper S in the Sears Trophy for production saloons (sedans) on Sunday.

In addition to the races and demonstrations, participants were variously assigned to four houses (teams) in the old-school British style for which they competed in games and other activities to earn points toward an overall prize of the Goodwood House Trophy.

For participants or interested onlookers wondering if the new event may be repeated, Lord March offered the following strong hint, "Our challenge now is to make the 73rd Members’ Meeting even better," he said.

The next major motor sport event on the Goodwood calendar is the popular Festival of Speed, slated this year for June 26-29. The Goodwood Revival, regarded by many as a must-see historic motor sport racing meeting, will take place over the weekend of September 12-14.
