Goodwood's annual Festival of Speed (FOS) saw a record attendance in 2014. The attendance announcement was made via press release from Goodwood on Wednesday, July 2. The festival, which ran from June 26-29, was the largest in the event’s history, attracting 200,000 visitors to West Sussex.
Drawing the crowds in such numbers were superstars from the world of motorsport including John Surtees, Sir Jackie Stewart, Sir Stirling Moss, Lewis Hamilton, Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastien Loeb, Didier Auriol, Richard Petty, Mark Webber, Giacomo Agostini, Wayne Gardner and Freddie Spencer.
Entertainment included the Michelin Supercar Run held against the clock and creating a popular winner in gamer-turned racer Jann Mardenborough. The Forest Rally Stage presented by Skoda saw victory for Dani Sordo on the UK debut of the Hyundai i20 WRC. The GAS Arena also raised the adrenaline of the crowd.
The Moving Motor Show presented by the AA in association with "The Telegraph" drew in a crowd of 34,000 motoring enthusiasts, making it the most-attended Thursday of the Festival of Speed since a fourth day was added. The show attracted an all-time high of 20 exhibitors, including: Audi, BMW, Citroen, Dacia, Ferrari, Ford, GKN, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Rolls Royce, SEAT, Skoda, Toyota and Volvo.
According to Goodwood, the event may now claim to be the "unofficial British Motor Show" with 18 UK first views of new machinery and world debuts including: Ford Focus ST, Bentley Continental GT3 R, Honda NSX Concept and the Peugeot 208 GTi 30th anniversary edition.
One of the many highlights of the hill climb portion of the FOS was the dual run of the Formula 1 1964 World Champion John Surtees in his 1964 winning Ferrari F1 car followed right behind by current Formula 1 driver and 2007 World Champion, Kimi Raikkonen driving his 2007 winning Ferrari. About this year's Festival, Lord March said, "Once again the Festival of Speed has produced a thrilling spectacle on the Hillclimb and delighted hundreds of thousands of visitors who have brought their enthusiasm for motor sport to Goodwood."
He continued, "Our event theme was ‘Addicted to Winning’ and with reams guests that include seven Formula 1 world champions and some of the greatest drivers from NASCAR, rallying, sportscars and motorcycling, we’ve managed to gather more famous names from motor sport than ever before. And we were blessed with splendid weather all weekend too."
Goodwood is not finished putting on motor sports extravaganzas for 2014. The annual Goodwood Revival -- featuring historic and vintage racing with participants and spectators wearing period costumes from the 1940s to the 60s -- takes place September 12-14.
