The Unified Government, in cooperation with the Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Association, will kick-off the beginning of a study on the historical Strawberry Hill neighborhood during a town hall meeting in the Commission Chamber of City Hall on Monday, February 6th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
"This is so exciting. We have been waiting a long time for a historic survey like this," says Carole Diehl, President of the Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Association. "It will be wonderful for our neighborhood!"
The "Historical and Cultural Resource Survey" presentation delivered by Kerry Davis, Principal of Preservation Solutions LLC, will consist of historical documentation of more than 210 buildings in Strawberry Hill. The general principles and benefits of historic preservation, as well as the National Register of Historic Places and its affect on property owners are topics that will also be covered during the open meeting. The project is partially funded by a grant from the Kansas Historic Preservation Office and the National Park Service, a division of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
Preservation Solutions is a historic preservation consulting firm based in Wamego, Kansas, with more than 14 years of experience. The firm has completed similar preservation projects in communities throughout the Midwest, including the Kansas communities of Kansas City, Topeka, Norton, Manhattan, Overland Park, Abilene, Emporia, Glasco, Atchison, and Leavenworth.
The presentation will focus on the survey project components and work products, as well as the significant state and federal financial incentives available for the rehabilitation of certified historic buildings. The study will be conducted over a 6 to 8 month period. In addition, the project will rely on the assistance of volunteers from the neighborhood and other interested parties. The presentation is open to the public. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to attend and introduce themselves.
