Historic Sauder Village offers two special weekend events

Clevelanders seeking a family-oriented, fun and educational weekend getaway should consider a journey to historic Sauder Village in Archbold, Ohio where you can experience what life was like in rural Ohio more than 100 years ago at two separate events on consecutive weekends in July. It is approximately a 2.5 hour drive from Cleveland.

Summer on the Farm Being offered on Saturday, July 12 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., the Summer on the Farm event offers family members the chance to experience hands-on farm activities from years past including hand cranking ice cream, washing clothes on a scrub board, grating soap, flailing wheat, gardening and visitors can even participate in a spelling bee.

Explore the Crafts Event Taking place on Saturday, July 19, this educational event in the historic village gives guests the opportunity to observe skilled artisans from Sauder Village at work making handcrafted items. Among the sights visitors may see is a lump of clay being transformed into an exquisite vase by a skilled potter or see a blacksmith craft a candlestick out of molten iron or watch as a cooper constructs a wooden bucket.

What makes this event special is that guests are invited to let their creativity flow and try their hand at some of the crafts. Hands-on activities for all ages include spinning, weaving, woodworking, tinsmithing, pottery and blacksmithing. Visitors can try making wooden butterflies, wooden tops and felt balls and can help sew a broom or assemble a wooden bucket.

A Bit About Sauder Village Established by Eric J. Sauder, the founder of Sauder Woodworking Company ( featuring ready-to-assemble furniture), historic Sauder Village is made up of several historic areas where visitors can witness such activities as sheep shearing, planting, harvesting, food preparation, canning and preserving and cooking during the course of the seasons.

Today, the Village complex also includes a 350-seat restaurant, a bakery, a 98 room country inn, a campground and an exhibit-performance center.

For those wishing to stay overnight, check out the Sauder Heritage Inn on the property. The facility offers queen/queen rooms. king room and suites. Hours for both the Summer on the Farm and Explore the Crafts events are 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Admission is $16 for adults and $10 for students (6-16). Children 5 and under are free. Admission also includes access to all historic areas in the Village. Parking is free.
