Historic Preservation Commission presents Old House Expo; March 19th

Whether you are an 'old house' owner, or maybe just a fan, you're going to want to make plans to attend this years' Old House Expo coming March 19th at the Fountain Street Church.  For just $7.00 (adults, seniors $5, and 'little' historians 12 and under - FREE), you'll see demonstrations of various architectural techniques, from replacing window sash ropes (always a tricky endeavor), mortar replacement strategies and even what it takes to do energy audits for your home.

This is the 6th annual event, but it's the first time it's being held in Grand Rapids (the first five were in Kalamazoo) so put it on your calendar right now to come out and show your support to make sure it continues to happen in our little slice of historic treasures!

Many of the historic projects of today could not be realized without the help of Michigan's SHPO office and the designation of historic districts.  As you can imagine, it takes a lot of work to acquire this 'designation', but with the right contacts (and architect), you'll soon be making a tremendous contribution to saving some of the truly significant structures in our built environment.

To find out more about what it takes to become an Historic District, there's a project underway right now in Belding to save an historic clock tower; it's a worthy project for a worthy cause - contact Jon McGowan at the Silk City Preservation Society to find out how you can help!

And whether it's your 'bag' or not, Historic Preservation is a significant factor in architectural design of today because it can provide tremendous insight into new design solutions and construction methods.  It's a way of learning what 'worked' and what didn't, and can open our eyes and ears to the future by providing new ideas and letting us 'hear' what's in store for our architectural futures.
