Historic Pecan Valley Golf Club is no longer open for golf

The Pecan Valley Golf Club closed for good on Sunday, according to an Express News report. The course hosted a PGA Championship in 1968 and the Texas open in 1967, 1969, and 1970. The company that manages Pecan Valley has not commented on why it's closing the site.

PecanValley Golf Club was a golf club located in on the southeast side of San Antonio. The club was established in 1963, the golf course was designed by J. Press Maxwell. It was renovated in 1998 by Bob Cupp. The course hosted the PGA Championship in 1968, when Julius Boros edged Arnold Palmer on the 18th hole.

Recently, Pecan Valley was featured in Golf Digest as one of the top 25 courses in the state.

With the expansion of San Antonio to outside Loop 410 and most recently Loop 1604 it seems that golfers by-passed the historic Pecan Valley Golf  Club for newer and perhaps more modern golfing facilities. With the closing of Pecan Valley Golf Club a piece of golf history has been lost.
