As reported by Examiner back in early November, Kum & Go closed both of its Amici Espresso locations in Des Moines on December 13. Today, the downtown Amici location (in the Midland Building at 206 6th Avenue) will re-open as Hippee Coffee. Jeff Young, owner of the Midland Building, purchased most of Amici's equipment and even snaked three of its employees to re-open the shop under the name that the building used to carry, the Hippee Building. Hippee Coffee will remain open until Young finds someone else willing to run a coffee shop in the space.
As the Des Moines Botanical Garden continues to undergo its transformation, both inside and out, at least one area is finished. Trellis, the Botanical Garden's new restaurant, opened its doors on December 3. Trellis is run by Chef/Owner Lisa LaValle and Chef Rose Punelli. The restaurant is open for lunch Tuesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The menu features a variety of soups, salads, sandwiches, and pastas, including vegetarian/vegan options. The average entrée runs about $10.95.
Also opening recently was Jeremiah Bullfrogs Bar and Grill. The Cajun-themed restaurant and bar went into the space formerly occupied by Stadium Bar & Grill at 1907 EP True Parkway in West Des Moines. Stadium closed in May after a fire. Jeremiah Bullfrogs offers a Cajun menu featuring items like Gator Tacos, Scallop Po'boys, and Creole -spiced Swamp Burgers. Entrée prices run from $3.99 to $8.99. The bar is open 7 days a week from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., and kitchen hours run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
